Focus On Engagement Sessions

A comprehensive guide to engagement sessions and why they're so valuable.

Everyone thinks of the wedding photography, but a valuable aspect of the celebration to the wedding is the engagement season leading up to your special day.  Today's blog post is just a few reasons on why an engagement session is a brilliant idea for you!

reason one

Believe it or not, you'll probably be using those engagement photos over and over again before the big day arrives. Our clients love sending out photo-laced Save The Date cards or using their images for their wedding website.  Other clients actually incorporate engagement images into their wedding invitation suite! We've also created wedding sign-in albums for clients with engagement photos in them.  And even large canvases for signing.  Some of our clients even choose to display their engagement photos in frames either in the venue greeting guests arriving to the wedding, or on the reception tables as part of their table designs. However you choose to dress up your wedding stationary, we're almost sure you'll find multiple uses for these fun, casual photographs.

reason two

When your big day arrives, some couples may be nervous about being in front of the lens. Having an engagement session beforehand is a great way for us to get to know each other and practice working together.  Our portfolio is filled with couples like you, who are enjoying their time together. Relaxed with one another. Part of that confidence and natural interaction you see is from being comfortable in front of the camera.  Your engagement session allows you both to familiarize yourself with how we work to get you those amazing "all the feels" images you've come to expect from BPP. You'll feel more confident for your wedding photos, and know exactly what to expect when working with us on your wedding day.

reason three

In your engagement session, anything goes!  We highly encourage every kind of self-expression, including fashion taste, favorite colors, hobbies, special locations, and anything else that's unique to you as a couple. Sometimes couples choose locations where the proposal took place, others a favorite bar or outdoor spot. We encourage you to incorporate props, pets, hobbies, or anything else that's special to you! We love getting creative and having clients bring their own creative ideas into their engagement session.

reason four

In your unique story of "YOU", the engagement chapter is just as important as the wedding day itself.  It's the promise. The point where you said to one another, "I choose you."  We think that deserves to be shown as much joy and attention as the rest of your major life events!  In the chapters of your life together, this is Chapter One.  Your engagement photos are another valuable narrative for your future family.  Besides announcing your upcoming wedding, your photos will be among some of the first that decorate your walls turning your house into a home and being daily reminders of the love you share.  And we think that's pretty special.

Of Love and Country, Fort Myers Florida Engagement Photography

So, I would be lying if I said that I have been secretly jealous of all these other photographers who have had the opportunity to photograph an engagement session with one of the participants being in uniform.   A good friend of mine did a session last year and as I looked through her images, all I could think was, I want my own military session.  Well, I got it!  Engagement photography is one of my favorites and we took advantage of a few local locations in Fort Myers Florida for this one.  Including the use of a horse farm thanks to a very generous family member of mine! ( Thank You again Kelly!) Megan and Tyler have a super sweet story that I just couldn't do justice on my own of retelling, so I'll let Megan do it in her own words.

Tyler and I went to the same high school, Estero High. Tyler was one grade ahead of me. We had mutual friends and knew of each other during our time in high school but never hung out alone. His best friend, Patrick, used to give me rides to school every day and one day when Patrick’s car broke down, Tyler gave us all a ride to school. But, Tyler has no recollection of this morning.

As years passed, we both graduated and went off to college. Tyler decided to join the Marine Corps after finishing his first year of college. He came home from Pensacola on annual leave in February of 2014 before he was moved to his unit, where he would begin his real job in the Marine Corps as a flight equipment technician. My best friend, Emma, was currently and still is, in a relationship with one of Tyler’s good friends, Dylan. Emma had invited me to meet at Tyler’s house before we went out to the bar to have our girl’s night out. From the moment I saw him again in his house, I knew he was going to be mine. I had this feeling that I never felt before. Every woman in my family had told me in previous years that I would know within the first five minutes of talking to a man if I were to marry him or not.

Tyler’s leave ended very quickly and had to go back to base in Jacksonville, North Carolina. I was very upset that I only had a few days with him before he had to go back, but that’s part of being with a man in the military. We talked every single day, for almost all of the day until I saw his face again in May of 2014. When he was home, we never left each others sight. We adapted very quickly to him leaving for a few months at a time and coming home for only a short period of time. We also got used to only being able to see each other on Face Time.

Tyler came home again for Thanksgiving of 2014 and I never caught on to any of his plans. He took me shopping on Black Friday at midnight, he took me shopping the next morning, he took me to get my nails done, all which was normal. We went out to dinner to our favorite restaurant, Carabba’s, which again was normal. While we were finishing eating at Carabba’s, our server came to our table to tell us that Matt would like to buy us dessert. Well, my step-brother’s name is Matt so I got up and started looking for him but I couldn’t see him in the restaurant, so I was quite confused who Matt was until the waiter came back around to inform me that it was the manager. I sat there and thought, “What did we deserve to get a free dessert?” Next thing I know Tyler is scooting his way out of the booth and the server gave him a plate, which Tyler then passed to me. The plate had four chocolate covered strawberries (my favorite) and in red icing it read, “Will you marry me?” Tyler got down one knee and of course I said yes!

All the best to these two! It was such a pleasure to meet them both and to get to record this chapter in their love story!

Merry Christmas!

christmas tree, tis the season, merry christmas 2014Oh my. What a year.  I had this amazing plan to execute this super great family photo of my crew.  I even had the  Christmas card designed.  One version for the studio for sending to clients, the other for family and friend.   But, guess what?? My poor family has been terribly sick for many many days.  Just now we are starting to feel better, even if a less than terrific cough is hanging around. But, at least it is in time to truly enjoy the next two days spent with family, laughing, enjoying meals and being together.  It was my fear that we would still be quarantined away from everyone.  So, although it is not the images I had planned.  Or the card design for that matter.  I wanted to share how, even in chaos, there is blessings.

We are together.  Our health, it is on the mend and we will have our time spent cherishing the memories made over the next couple of days.

A family photo can happen another day.  And trust me, it will. :)

So here is my "stand in" Holiday greeting, with the back of the card design for the clients.   Thank you all so very much for continuing to support BPP! It means more than you will ever know!

Koreshan State Park Engagement

I love shooting in Koreshan State Park and Historic Site.  Located in Estero, FL, Koreshan offers clients a rustic style setting with multiple backdrop textures without ever hinting to the famous Florida beaches.   For some clients, toes in the sand is not the look they are going for.  For that reason, Koreshan becomes a fantastic alternate option. For Cassie and Jason, they wanted an area that would compliment their northern wedding next year, so they chose to shoot at Koreshan State Park and Historic Site.

These two!  We met up with their sweet pups for an engagement session that was relaxed and casual.  Nothing forced or strained, just the two of them and their sweet fur boys.   I had such a great time amid all the laughs with these two.  I wish them nothing but joy and happiness in their life together!  Their September wedding is going to be filled with so much love. You can see it in every glance they make toward one another.

Beware! The scary trend in Wedding Photography

complete wedding party, wedding photography, don't get burned Hey there Awesome Bride - or Groom - or Planner!

Can we have a Come to Jesus Moment?  There is a super scary trend in Wedding Photography happening everyday, and awesome people like YOU are getting burned. Bad.

So, here's what is going down -

You are searching for a photographer for your wedding.   Your budget is so tight it's squeaking, and then the clouds part and the angels sing!  You just landed on a photographer's page with amazing images and they are SUPER CHEAP!  No, I mean you just can't believe your luck!

So, in your haste to snag this photography guru,  you book no questions asked and then months down the road you get your images back.  Only, something is wrong.

None of what you've been given looks like the images on the photographers website.  As a matter of fact, you're finding it hard to believe that these images and the ones you saw were even taken by the same person!

*cue the DUN - DUN - DUNNNN! (Also if you love The Croods like I do, imagine Belt.)

You've just been had by a Fraud.   And it is happening - every day.

There are some awesome sites out there like  That are trying their best to keep up with this mess.  They are calling would be photographers out left and right, for stealing!   Yes, you heard me.  STEALING.

These "photographers" are wanting so badly to break into wedding photography that they are willing to con you and jeopardize their standing in the community at the same time. What happens with this scary trend in wedding photography, is these photographers slap up "the kind of work I would like to do"  on their websites, only they aren't telling the client YOU; that these are images they have not taken. They aren't telling you that this is a wedding shot by a seasoned pro - by someone who understood what to do when the light got tricky, or had the equipment in place to handle the No Flash rule at your church - the one that also wouldn't let them within 5 feet of the altar.

There is nothing wrong with being a new photographer looking to break into weddings.  We all do it.  We all have had to do it.  But there is a right and a wrong way.

Stealing and then coning you into believing they can produce a product they have no way of making is not the way.

real moments, wedding photography, real photographer

So - What can you do to protect yourself from this scary trend in wedding photography?

I'm glad you asked.

1.  Look for Consistency

All photographers develop their own style of shooting and editing.  Take a look around. If you see differences in the images you are looking at, there is a good possibility that the images are from different photographers.

2.  Ask to see a Complete Wedding

I don't care how it happens, if a photographer shoots a wedding they get it from beginning to end.  I have shot elopements (Just 2 people and the officiate) and guess what - there is a beginning, middle, and end to the photo story.  Ask for a complete wedding.   There is absolutely no reason that a photographer should not be able to show it to you.

3.  Check their Reviews or ask for References

Guess what?  Vendors network at events.  It happens.  Know what else - happy clients tell one another.   Look for their online reviews.  Ask for references if there are not many.  I personally only have 12 recorded online reviews on wedding wire - I've sent double the emails for requests - but not everyone will answer them.   However,  there are reviews by others on Facebook as well - so look around, somewhere, someone is talking about your photographer.  If you can't find anything at all, be worried.

4.  That brings us to -  Stalk them  ,   Check their social media

I don't know a single business owner that doesn't have their name out everywhere possible.  Check their social media.   You should find consistency in the work you are seeing on all platforms.  Look at Facebook, Google+, Twitter,Instagram - make it a priority to check up on them.   As a matter of fact - hang around for a bit, you can learn a lot about them by how they conduct themselves.  Maybe - even if their images are legit, they aren't a good match for you!  Just a thought.

5. Google Them

Yep, I am dead serious.  Google their name.  If they are online, you will see where.  And guess what - if they've ever been caught stealing photos you can bet there is a good chance you will find out about it.

6.  Pay attention to geographical clues

Unless your photographer advertises as a destination photog - seeing a fabulous Parisienne wedding in Utah might not be kosher!  Look around, dig, you're about to hand over thousands of dollars to this person, make them accountable to be who they say they are!

7. When all else fails - Trust Your Gut

I know you want to stick to your budget - I know that weddings are crazy expensive and hectic ( they don't have to be, I promise.)  But -  if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.  So, trust your gut.  If you get the skeevies from your photographer, it might be time to find a new one!

The Engagement Session is So Much More Than Pretty Pictures

naples city dock engagement

"But, we don't want the engagement session."

I strive to have an engagement session with every couple who pick Brooke Price Photography. The true value of an engagement session is so much more than what is on the surface.

An engagement session gives you the opportunity to become comfortable with me and in front of the camera. While you are getting used to being in front of the lens, I am learning about you, as a couple. I can begin to understand who you are together, your quirks, your personalities, etc.

For those who may be camera shy, you can become awkward around cameras. This discomfort can cause you to make the same false smile every time the shutter snaps. During the engagement session, I work to build your trust.  I look for ways to make you relax and settle in so we can capture more natural, honest expressions.

Even if I am not the photographer for you, heed this advice. Have an engagement session with the same photographer who will be covering your wedding. The idea of the engagement session isn't just for Save the Dates and a Reception Book, it is to build trust with your photographer. That trust will make your wedding day run smoother and with less stress.

Knowing and liking your photographer, is key in the success of your wedding. It will help keep you focused on the real reason you are having a wedding in the first place, each other.

Rustic Engagment discussing a Zombie Apocoplypse

2 minutes.  2 minutes was all it took during the very first phone call I answered from Rene to know we were kindred spirits.  That first call lasted nearly  two hours.  The last 10 minutes was discussing wedding details.   So, from a Hi how are you to zombies, to rustic charm and feel good atmosphere, I KNEW I really, really wanted to work with her and the awesome guy who stole her heart! In the couple of months from booking to setting up engagement pictures, Rene and I have become full on social media stalkers  friends.   We're FB friends, and Pinterest buddies, oh, and Walking Dead Fanatics.    Zombies, people.  We are seriously talking about zombies!  Oh yes, it will be epic!

My heart goes out to Brian, Rene's other half. Rene and I joke that we feed off one another's flavor of crazy. He was a trooper for the engagement pics, even if he confessed, he was there for her to make her happy.   I have never laughed so much with one couple.  These two.  *sigh*     They compliment each other perfectly.  Her boisterous laugh,  his quiet strength.   For all the differences one common thread that ties them all together,  their own brand of quirky love and how smitten they truly are with one another.

So, on the Saturday after Valentine's Day, these lovebirds flew the coop to tromp around Koreshan State Park with me, and I'm so very glad they did!    I can not wait for the wedding in October!!!

Don't Be Me. : Choosing a Wedding Photographer

Torn, pages glued together with Orange juice, and stuffed in our storage ottoman in the living room.   Books of any kind should never be treated like this. Those books, are my Wedding Albums. I want to tell you why.  And why I say,"Don't be me."

Every single detail of our wedding we planned ourselves, no planner, no coordinator.   I hand-made our centerpieces, the favors, our invitations, and my bouquet as well as that of my bridesmaids.  Oh!  And, I hand beaded my wedding dress.  ( 2 weeks, 257 pearls.  I think about 15 band-aids.)  We paid attention to every single little detail.  Every detail, but one.

All of those little details.  Every fantastic little detail about the day I married my husband  is in that ottoman.

In my planning and budgeting, I never once gave a two-minute thought to a wedding photographer.   I did have one.  It was a gift from my parents, and honestly one of the sweetest most thoughtful gifts.   But --

The photographer, wasn't who, if my husband and I had sat down and talked it over, would have picked.   We had nothing in common with him.  He knew literally nothing about us except the day we were getting married on.  And, it shows in my photos.   We are all happy.  The pictures are nice.   They just don't suit us, our style.  The images as nice as they are, feel like nice images of other people.

My cautionary tale is the fuel behind why I am so passionate about what I do, and why I want to give you some advice on choosing your wedding photographer.

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. This for most, is a once in a lifetime event. For that reason, choosing the right wedding photographer can be a critical part of your planning. Here is some helpful advice to get you started.

 choosing a wedding photographer

What do you like?

One of the first steps to choosing a wedding photographer is to get an idea of what type of photos you like. Explore different images and bookmark what draws your eye. Two great ways to achieve this are by either doing a Google search and bookmarking images, or my favorite, Pinterest.

Pinterest has made it increasingly easy to find your photography tastes. Create a board for your image inspiration then search and "Pin" away. A collection of about 15-20 images should be enough to give you an idea of what style you are drawn to. Note the similarities of the images, the emotion, processing (clean and bright, hazy and vintage, etc.). Once you have an idea of your likes, begin your search.

choosing a wedding photographer

Who do I know that is recently married?

What is the best place to start your search? Think of who you know that recently got married or engaged. Thanks to social media, they are sure to have an album of their photos you can view. Take a look. If what you see looks like it would mesh well with your inspiration board, ask your friend who their photographer was! Word of mouth is by far the best way for both you and your photographer to find each other.

choosing a wedding photographer

Google is my B.F.F.

This one is a bit trickier because of the amount of information you are going to get, but works just the same. Any reputable photographer is going to have a decent size web presence. There is a lot of work that goes into making sure that happens. So, open your browser and start a search! Then, dig. Check out their website, stop by their blog, they probably have a Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram (most have all). Check these as well. Look into how they interact with their clients. Keep an eye on their work. Does it mesh with your inspiration? Is it consistent?

Once you have established a list of photographers, it is time to get in contact! Many have websites with contact sections. How you choose to initiate contact with your photographer is up to you. You can send a quick message with the contact box, or you can call them. Either way it is important to provide as much information as possible in your first contact so that you photographer has an idea of the amount of coverage you will need.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when thinking of hiring your photographer:

  • Does their style suit your needs and what you imaging your end results will be?
  • Do your personalities work well together? ( you are going to be spending a lot of time with this person, make sure you like being around them)
  • Ask questions! Don't leave room for assumptions. No question is too big or too small and your photographer should be happy to help answer any that you may have.

choosing a wedding photographer

Hey! You didn't mention price!

When you were choosing the photos for your style/inspiration, you did that based on emotional connection. The same should be said for the photographers you are thinking to hire. You want to connect with their work the same way. These days, staying on budget is very important and not to be overlooked. It is your job to choose the areas of your wedding where you are going to place the most emphasis. Your wedding photography is an investment. This is THE item that forever holds those details and moments, forever. Every couple's budget is going to be different, and every couple's needs will be different as well. This guide was to help you in your journey of finding the wedding photographer that best suits you and will best capture your love story. Don't be afraid to ask the photographer of your choice if they offer payment plans.  Some are even willing to negotiate certain things.   The keyword is NEGOTIATE.  That isn't calling and asking them to do their service for a discount.  If you want them to give you something, you need to be willing to give something too.  So, say they have a package that is perfect for you except for a couple of items,  ASK them if there is a negotiation to be had.  What is the worst they will say, No?  Maybe.  But if you're wedding is being planned for the off season of your area on a weekday... well,  they might just make you a counter offer you can live with.  You'll never know if you never ask.

choosing a wedding photographer

Are my tips the end all be all of choosing a photographer?  No.  But this was just to get you going.   Lots of posts are going to tell you to ask about certain types of equipment and teach you lots of fancy photography terms. But, if you don't know what any of those things really are, does that information really help you?    Knowing what you like and what moves you and what speaks to you in an image, well.. that's a horse of a different color.  Start with what you know, and then ask, ask, ask.

If you think this post is helpful, feel free to share it with others!  If you've read this post and take an adventure around me site and think maybe we are a match, please reach out! I'd love to hear more about you!

Happy hunting all you engaged couples!   Feel free to leave any questions or comments.  I'm happy to answer the ones that I can, and if I can't, well I'll do my best to find the someone who can for you!

Just Us Two : Naples Beach Engagement

Kicking off the 2014 Studio Calendar is this super sweet couple.  Maria + Ashton are planning on having the wedding of their dreams this summer, and this session was just the start of some new moments for them.  Maria really wanted to have some fun and for the session to be casual.  She opted to have the session at one of our gorgeous local beaches, the Naples Beach.  We started the session at the Naples Pier and then traveled a bit north for some more images in the downtown area. The light was gorgeous! This couple was so much fun and I look forward to their wedding in August!

Sun filled Engagement in Naples Florida

BPP-R R-26_WEB.jpg

Rikki Lee + Ross rounded out the end of the Brooke Price Photography 2013 session calendar with their sun filled engagement session in Naples Florida.   Their engagement session began at the Naples City Dock where we were joined by their fur baby, Tober.   I don't get to work with a lot of animals for sessions, but I have to say, Tober was exceptionally behaved!

The weather for the session was BEAUTIFUL!  Perfectly clear with gorgeous light all around.  By only giving some gentle direction during the session, I was able to capture moments unique to Rikki Lee + Ross.  Their true emotions and love for one another.   After spending some time at the docks with Tober, it was time for just the couple and I to continue to our next location.

We rejoined at the Naples Pier, however, in December especially around the holidays it becomes a very crowded location.  We opted to drive to a near by public access that ended up being a diamond in the rough as we were able to take advantage of a local residences gorgeous curb appeal!!

Engagement sessions are so rewarding because they offer up a less stressful schedule than the wedding day. Also, they give me a chance to work with a couple and get to know them more before the big day.  It makes getting those "cozy" shots on the wedding day even easier as we have already worked together once and are more comfortable with one another.

An added bonus to an engagement session is the images mark the start of YOU.  They are perfect to adorn the walls of your new home together, as well, you can create great keepsakes for your wedding too like Thank You cards and Reception Albums!  When looking to invite guests and announce your upcoming wedding, these sweet moments make gorgeous Save The Dates!

Why not take a look at Rikki Lee + Ross'  Save the Date Video created for the couples Destination Wedding Website by BPP!

Please enjoy some of my favorite images as well!  Congratulations again Rikki Lee + Ross!
